this is a rare gem of a record from fantastic soul band the soul kids stemming from the democratic republic of congo, including covers of james brown & the mighty flames hit singles -lickin stick- (1968), -papa s got a brand new bag- (1965), wilson pickett’s -hey jude- and a french vocal version of otis redding’s soul hit -respect -. this amazing young band, which released only four 7inch singles and one album, is a great example of the influence of soul music and french pop bridging to the new afro soul scene that the musicians of kinshasa were involved in during the time of post-independence. ngoma was one of the first record labels intent on providing local artists recordings from both sides of the congo river to the people of the drc and west africa. created in 1948 by a greek man by the name of nicolas jeronimidis, the ngoma label was active through 1968, pressed in france until 1971, with a tremendous catalogue, including this historical and essential soul masterpiece!

5 would be the key number for the brand new chateau flight release on versatile. its been 5 years since the last release and it took 5 days to record. nicolas (i:cube) was busy with his own material, i moved to amsterdam 3 years ago and as we like to make music in the same space. it took a bit of time but finally it s here, the dam house ep. i invited nicolas to visit me last winter, not to do music but just for a cool adam hang out. this turned into 5 intense days of fun production in my studio. it was amazing for both of us to witness how our connection remained intact after all those years and the ideas came really quick. the vibes of the tracks all turned out pretty different, it s a true chateau flight kaleidoscope with an epic 10mn techno track sargan, a more house vibe, crazy (dam house mix), a heavy dark funk drive of lo and the ambient crazy(ambient mix). this record would have not been the same without redlight records,to whom this records dedicated. james and abel left their shop open at night just for us and as children in a candy store we went through the racks looking for samples that formed the inspiration for this ep.

time flies as the saying goes and indeed it has as quintessentials celebrates its 10 year anniversary. for a decade this mighty label has been getting some true love and support from all quarters. listening to the back catalogue now, most of the tunes still sound fresh and keep the label s famous deep, raw and real- motto alive. quintessentials has always been a platform for new talents as well as established artists, and with he likes of anton zap, vakula, baaz, the zohar, mcde, nicolas, ugly drums, toby tobias, borrowed identity, mat chiavaroli, 4004, soul of hex, s3a, los goddard, felipe gordon, javonntte……to name but a few, it s an enviable back catalogue. this -ten years quintessentials- compilation offers a wide range of styles: detroit inspired techno and house, a ruff chicago stomper, some proper deep house, a discoish tool, and crafty beats and basslines all over! we hope you enjoy this compilation as much as we do. we are ready for the next decade! are you?
